Career aptitude and personality tests are useful tools that you and I can use during the creation of our career plan. These tests are usually scientific and can be used as the foundation for personal reflection and career growth.

 In addition, personality tests are common among hiring organisations today. I have completed all the tests listed in this article.

The results of these tools while they act as a good guide should not be viewed as the final authority in the direction of your career. 

Ultimately, you should use these tools in combination with prayer and personal introspection.

Hereunder are 17 free online career aptitude and personality tests.

  1. Values in Action (VIA) Character Strengths

Developed by psychologists Dr. Martin Seligman and the late Dr. Christopher Peterson, VIA Character Strengths is a free personality test that has been utilised by over six million people.

This survey boasts of its positivity and a scientific approach to validating personality strengths.  This test took me about ten minutes to complete and contains about one hundred questions.

It is also applicable to both adults and youths and provided me with 24 areas of strengths. There is a customised test that youths between the ages of 10 to 17 can take specifically. 

The test promises to assist users in leading a happier and engaged life. At premium prices, more in depth report can be accessed.

  1. Holland Code Career Test

This career test is based on the Holland Theory of Career Choice developed by John L Holland in 1959. Holland’s theory has since dominated the career planning space and has been used extensively in career counseling.

This test presents a three letter code which shows which personality types are prevalent based on the results of the test. The results also recommend jobs that are suited to persons with the relevant personality type.

 The test consists of 48 questions and takes about five minutes to complete. Participants need to choose from a scale of one to five with one being dislike and five being enjoy.

  1. Similar Minds

This personality test consists of 60 questions where test takers are required to describe whether the sentence is very inaccurate or inaccurate. This test is based on how the test taker feels, think and act. 

Approximately six minutes is required for completion and the providers recommend that some persons take the test more than once.

The results of the test states whether you are a SLOAN or RLUEN personality type. The result also provides career suggestions on what roles best suits persons with this particular personality type.

  1. 123 Test

This test is based on the Big Five Personality test that which was developed over three to four decades by several independent researchers.

This test contains 120 statements where you have to indicate if you agree, strongly agree, disagree or strongly disagree. There is also an option to provide a neutral response.

The test contains 120 questions which should be attempted in sequential order. The test was completed in 15 minutes.

There is an option to buy a more extensive report. The report summarises responses based on the Big Five Factors being openness to experience, conscientiousness or work ethic, extraversion, agreeableness and natural reactions.

  1. The Four Tendencies

This quiz is designed by Gretchen Rubin who identified four human tendencies being upholder, questioner, obliger and rebel.

There are eight scenario based questions where you should select the response that best describes you. This test takes about five minutes to complete and provides your dominant tendency.

  1. The Five Love Languages

Though relationship focused, The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman can provide deeper knowledge of yourself.

Chapman classifies love languages into five types being gift giving, quality time, physical touch, acts of service (devotion) and words of affirmation. There are 30 questions which take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

  1. 16 Personalities

The test took approximately ten minutes to complete and further information about your personality type can be assessed at a cost.

The test seeks to understand the five personality aspects being mind, energy, nature, tactics and identity and classifies test takers into four types; analysts, diplomats, sentinels and explorers.

The results also suggests career paths based on your personality type.

  1. Wonderlic Test

I decided to include this test as it was used at a previous employer for managerial hires. This test assesses the ability of a person to learn and problem solve.

Twelve minutes is allocated for 15 questions. There are average scores available for certain types of occupations.

  1. Social Styles

This model is described as the world’s largest behavioural style model. There are 20 questions in this test which can be completed in five minutes. 

A colour and description of your style with an explanation is presented as the result.

  1. 365 Colour Personality Test

This test consists of 25 questions which are situational. A colour with a description of personality type is presented with a short report.

  1. Cattell’s 16 Personality Factors

Based on the work of British Psychologist Raymond Catell, this test seeks to explain personality based on 16 traits. There are 164 statements which takes about 15 minutes to complete.

Test takers need to choose whether they agree, disagree, strongly agree or strongly disagree. There is also a neutral option. Results are ranked on a scale between 0 and 4. Explanations are provided for each of the 16 factors for low and high scores respectively.

  1. DISC Personality Test

Rates your personality based on DISC factors which stand for dominance, influence, steadiness and compliance. This test took approximately 9 minutes to complete and it provides a statement on how you are likely to make a positive impact.

  1. Free Online Pre-employment Personality Test

This test has 23 questions which took approximately three minutes to complete. A report is presented with five traits. A more extensive report can be purchased. 

  1. Institute of Psychometric Coaching

Free practice personality test which rates 25 statements on a 5 point scale strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree and strongly agree.

Free results are presented for two traits while the feedback of the remaining 28 traits needs to be purchased.

  1. Enneagram Test

This test provides the test taker with a choice of three responses being no, yes or partly. There are two tests being the classical enneagram test and the enneagram test with instinctual variant.

The results are presented in personality types from one to nine.

  1. Jungian Personality Test

This test was developed from the work of psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung. The Jung personality test measures your preferences for dealing and relating to people.

The test contains 60 questions. A basic report which provides brief insight into your personality is revealed. You can upgrade by making a payment for a more extensive report.

  1. The Fear Archetypes

Ruth Soukup surveyed over 4000 persons and discovered that fear showed up in distinct patterns in their lives which she termed the fear archetypes.

From this study, 7 distinct fear types were identified. These were the procrastinator, the rule follower, the people pleaser, the outcast, the self-doubter, the excuse maker and the pessimist.
