Job Interviews can make even the most extroverted person nervous. Therefore, if you are naturally shy and introverted, even more preparation is required.

According to the late career planner, John Crystal, if you are shy you should prepare for interviews by doing the following:

  • Go out and talk to people about anything to develop the skill of talking to people
  • Complete informational interviews

Richard Nelson Bolles in his best-selling book ‘ What Color is your Parachute’ stated that people who followed John Crystal’s advice had an 86% in finding a job and not just any job, but the job or new career that they were looking for.

John Crystal’s work was further enhanced by a job hunting expert Daniel Porot. The PIE method was the system developed by Porot specifically for job seekers who are shy.

Porot recommended that a shy person should typically complete 3 interviews:

  • Practice Interview
  • Informational Interview
  • Employment Interview

The Practice Field Survey

The practice field survey is the first interview that a shy person must complete. To get practice, pick a topic that interest you and go out and talk to people about the subject.

As an example, if you are interested in clothing, visit the city and talk to persons in clothing stores about style and fashion. If you are interested in blogging, then reach out to other bloggers.

Meetup.com is a great website that you can connect with others who have similar interest as you have. Alternatively, you can also consider joining organisations such as Toastmasters where you can get experience with public speaking.

A practice field survey should last for about 10 minutes. It is important to show courtesy by not going over this allotted time. Porot suggest if you are nervous that you bring someone else along with you.

You should complete as many practice field surveys as you can until you become comfortable speaking to people.

Practice Field Survey Questions to Ask

In the event that you cannot come up with your own questions, Daniel Porot recommended the following questions for practice field surveys:

  • How did you start with this hobby?
  • What excite you or interest you the most about it?
  • What aspect of your hobby interest you the least?
  • Who else do you know who shares this interest, hobby, or enthusiasm or could tell me more about my curiosity.
  • Can I go and see them? May I mention that it was you who suggested I see them? May I say that you recommended them?
  • Would you mind sharing your email address and contact information with me?

Informational Interviewing

Informational Interview Definition

Informational interviewing is the process of identifying a job/ career that interest you and setting up a meeting with persons who perform these roles day to day with the aim of understanding whether or not the job or career really interests you.

If you are shy to attend an informational interview, Porot suggest that you can bring someone along with you.

He also recommends that informational interview should last for about 10 minutes and no longer. Out of respect, the only exception should be if the individual begs you to stay longer.

One key factor of informational interviews is that this must be done with workers and not anyone who has the power to hire you.

While this is the case, informational interviews could result in a job referral so ensure that you put your best effort forward.

Informational Interview Questions to Ask

Porot suggested the following questions to ask in an informational interview:

  • How did you get interested in this work and how did you get hired?
  • What excites or interests you the most about it?
  • What do you find is the thing you like the least about it?
  • Who else do you know who does this same kind or similar work but with this difference_______? An example of a difference could be qualification.
  • What kind of challenges or problems do you have to deal with in this job?
  • What skills do you need in order to meet these challenges or problems?
  • Would you mind sharing your email address and contact information with me?

Informational Interviewing Tips

  • Ensure and send a thank you email or thank you letter after the interview. Ideally this should be sent within 24 hours when the meeting is still fresh in the individual’s mind.
  •  An informational interview should never ever be with someone who have the power to hire you rather than workers. Bolles states that if this happens you have botched up the interview.
  • Prepare an elevator pitch so that you can introduce yourself seamlessly.
  • Though in an informational interview you are asking the questions, prepare asking the questions in advance to ensure that you ask confidently.
  • Arrive on time as the individual is sacrificing of their time to meet with you.
  • Stick to the time that you agreed to at the start of the interview. If you have requested 10 minutes of the person’s time, the stick to that time unless the person insist on going that time period.
  • Dress professionally.

Thank You Notes or Email

Porot recommends that for both practice field survey and informational interviews that thank you emails or letters are sent.

This is the reason why it is important to ask for contact information in both the informational interviews and practice field surveys.

It is critical that a thank you email or letter is sent within 24 hours when the meeting is still fresh in the individual’s mind.

Subject Line: Thank you for your time.
Dear Mr. /Ms. ________,
Thank you for taking the time to meet with me yesterday.

I have learned so much about your organisation and what your role as content marketer entails.

I have also reached out to Mr. John Doe who you recommended and we are meeting later this week.

I really appreciate your time and the valuable knowledge that you have shared with me.
