The book of Proverbs is filled with sound advice as it relates to friendships. This biblical book was written in part by Solomon, Son of King David. Solomon is also believed to be the key figure in the biblical book of Ecclesiastes.

Below are 6 practical strategies that you and I could use when making and evaluating our friendships. Quotations are based from the King James Version of the bible.

How to Make Friends

The book of Proverbs urges that in order to have friends that you and I must be willing to extend our friendship to others.

Proverbs chp 18 v 24 states:

“A man that hath friends must show himself friendly.”

Friends are Counselors and Mentors

Proverbs in numerous verses refers to friends as counselors and mentors.

Our friends are constantly around our daily lives.  Therefore our friendships have a massive influence on who we are and what we become.

Whether we like it or not, their traits will rub off on us.

Hereunder are some of these verses:-

Proverbs chp 15 v 22 states:

Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counselors they are established.

Proverbs chp 27 v 17 states:

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

Proverbs chp 27 v 9 also echoes similar sentiments:

“Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.

The Personality of Friends

Proverbs distinctly admonishes you and I not to be friends with persons who are angry and hot tempered. Adopting these traits will only cause trouble.

Proverbs chp 22 v 24-25 states:

“Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go; lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.”

Instead, you and I should chose friends who are wise, so that their wise sayings and lifestyle will positively impact us.

Proverbs chp 13 v 20 states:

“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

Loyalty in Friendship

Proverbs encourages us to be loyal in our friends. As a friend we should be steadfast and not abandon or give up on our friends.  It also goes on to further underscore that loyalty should be extended by children to their father’s friends.

Proverbs 27 v 10 says:

“Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not.”

 Friends are Promise-keepers

The wise words from the book of Proverbs admonishes us to keep any promises that we make for our friends even in tough situations. An example was presented in Proverbs that if you have guaranteed a loan for a friend that you should make good on your word.

Proverbs chp 6 v 1-3 states:-

“My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, thou art snared with the words of thy mouth.  Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.”

A True Friend May Wound Us

Proverbs chp 27 v 6 states:-

“Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.”

At times our friends may have to tell us some cold hard truth which may hurt our feelings. Proverbs states that these wounds are a show of loyalty and faithfulness.

Therefore, ensure that your friends are persons whose opinions you value enough so that they can tell you the truth at all times.
