The Book of Psalm is filled with various poetic utterances that you and I can use in several ways in our spiritual walk with God.

The book was written by various authors including Asaph, Moses, Ethan, Solomon with a large portion of the Psalms written by King David. The verses quoted in this article are from the King James Version of the Bible.

Hereunder are 10 ways in which to use the book of Psalm effectively:

For Prayer

Our prayers usually reflect the season of our life and God loves when we pray his words back to him. A powerful part of praying is speaking the word of the Lord. In Psalms, we see that the authors emphasises the purity of God’s words.

We can use the Psalms when we pray for:

For Strength

Psalm 18 v 2
The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

Psalm 18 v 32
It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.

Psalm 118 v 14
The Lord is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.

When we are in need of Cleansing

Psalm 51 v 10-11
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me.

For Deliverance

Psalm 59 v 1-3
Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.
Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, from save me from bloody men.
For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Lord.

To cry out to God

Psalm 69 v 13
But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O Lord, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

A yearning to learn more about God

Psalm 86 v 5-8
For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.
In the day of my trouble I will call unto thee: for thou wilt answer me.
Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.

Psalm 42 v 1-2
As the hart, panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

When Job Seeking

Psalm 37 v 5

Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in  him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Psalm 37 v 23

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord; and he delighteth in his way.

For Meditation

The Book of Psalm advises that you and I should meditate on the law of the Lord day and night. There are several scriptures that reminds us of the goodness of the Lord that we could use as part of our biblical meditation.

Psalm 3 v 3
But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

Psalm 9 v 10
And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast forsaken them that seek thee.

Psalm 12 v 6-7
The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation forever.

Psalm 18 v 2-3
The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Recognition of the need for Thanksgiving

Psalm 92 v 1 states that it is a good thing to give thanks and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High.

Psalm 30 v 1
I will extol thee, O Lord; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made foes to rejoice over me. O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.

Psalm 75 v 1
Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare.

Psalm 118 v 1
O Give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

A Source of Encouragement

Psalm 34 v 7
The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

Psalm 34 v 18
The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 55 v 16
As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord will save me.

Psalm 55 v 22
Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Psalm 61 v 2
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed, Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Psalm 91 v 2
I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Reminder of the importance of fearing God

Similar to the book of Proverbs, the Psalms places particular emphasis on the importance of fearing God.

The following are some scriptures highlighting this importance:

Psalm 33 v 18
Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy.

Psalm 34 v 9
O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

Psalm 111 v 10
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Psalm 112 v 1
Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly greatly in his commandments.

Psalm 115 v 13
He will bless them that fear the Lord, both small and great.

Psalm 118 v 6
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

Psalm 147 v 11
The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.

For praise and worship to God

Praise and worship to God is so important in keeping you and I positive and uplifted.

The following are some verses that can be used for praise and worship to God.

Psalm 8 v 1
O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

Psalm 16 v 11
Thou will show me the path of life; in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 18 v 46
The Lord liveth; and blessed be my Rock: and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

Psalm 29 v 2
Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

Psalm 40 v 5
Many, O Lord my God, are the wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts are to usward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

Psalm 44 v 8
In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever.

Psalm 47 v 1
O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

Build Trust in God

Totally dependence on God in every and all things is critical for every believer in God. The Book of Psalm is filled with many verses that can strengthen our trust in God.

Psalm 9 v 10
And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

Psalm 12 v 6-7

As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. The Lord is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed.

Psalm 29 v 4
The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

Psalm 31 v 1
In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.

Psalm 37 v 5
Commit thy way unto to the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Strengthen your Faith

Similar to trust, faith is a key ingredient that you and I must live by as believers in God.

Psalm 28 v 7
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

Psalm 29 v 4
The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

Psalm 29 v 11
The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.

Psalm 33 v 18
Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; to deliver their soul from death, and keep them alive in famine.

There are so many songs that we sing today that are from the Book of Psalm that are sung today.

Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty, give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I; for thou hast been a shelter for me and a strong tower from the enemy.

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

Psalm 137 v 1
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

Realization of God’s Presence

God is omnipresent. He is everywhere. The Book of Psalm provides several reminders of his presence and power.

Psalm 8 v 1
O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

Psalm 23 v 1
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Psalm 33 v 11
The counsel of the Lord standeth forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Psalm 33 v 15
The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

Final Thoughts
